Frequently Asked Questions about Bermuda Travel
Ever wondered why the male residents of a tropical island such as Bermuda are always pictured wearing funny long tailored shorts with ties? Why does it seem that Bermuda is obsessed with pomp and circumstance? What is the history of this country, which is almost two-thirds black and one-third white? How big is Bermuda? Do they drive on the right or left side of the road? What are the entry requirements for travellers to Bermuda?
Here are answers to some of the most Frequently Asked Questions about this charming and unique island.
When is the best time to travel to Bermuda? The off season is November to March, and airfare is usually cheaper during these months. The weather is cooler (55°F at night and 70°F daytime) and windier during the off season. In summer, Bermuda is popping with hotel activities and the beaches are always open, both of which are not the case in the off season, when some hotels even close. The off season water temperatures might be a bit cold for lots of swimming and snorkeling, but you cans still play golf, cycle, or get married! Hurrican season is August and September, mostly.
What about Duty-Free shopping?Bermuda has limited offerings on duty-free shopping. For liquor, you have to purchase at least two liters to qualify, but U.S. citizens can only bring back 1 liter of alcohol duty-free. This obviously makes duty-free liquor shopping difficult.
Where is the airport, and how can I get to my hotel? You'll most likely fly into Bermuda International Airport, which is on the east end of Bermuda. There are taxis at the airport, and it will cost you between US$12 and $35 to get to your hotel, depending on where it's located. Trips are anywhere from half an hour to one hour, again depending on location. There is also a shuttle service that takes vacationers from the airport to hotels, but you have to make a reservation. Shuttle service is generally cheaper than the taxi.
How long does it take to get to Bermuda? From US northeast coast cities the flight is only about two hours. From Toronto it's about 3 hours.
Is there public transportation?Yes, and it's oh so Bermuda! If you take public transportation, look for pink and blue poles or a stone shelter...these are your bus stops, and you'll be riding colorful pink and blue buses. Get tokens, because drivers will not make change for you. Fare varies depending on destination. St. George's also has its own private minibus system, and they will drop you wherever you want. Nice!
How else can I travel around Bermuda?Bermuda has a wonderful ferry system, based in the port in Hamilton. Ferries go to Paget, Somerset, and Warwick. It's pretty cheap, and you can take your bicycle with you for no extra charge. You can also bring your moped, but only to Somerset...they're not allowed on the ferries that go to Paget and Warwick. Ferry operators are friendly and helpful. This is a great system but limited on Sundays.
How do most people get around on Bermuda?Mopeds are very popular on Bermuda, and steep hills and winding roads make cycling difficult in some areas. Save the bicycle for pleasure riding on planned routes. There are tons of beautiful roads that are perfect for cycling. If you need to get somewhere easily, mopeds are best.
Can't I rent a car?Nope, this is a small island, and if you need motorized transportation, try any of the services mentioned above, or rent a moped or scooter. Bermuda's roads are very twisty and winding and narrow. You wouldn't want to drive a car here. Scooter and moped rental agencies are easy to find.
What are the tipping customs?Hotels will add a 10% service charge to your bill, to cover baggage handling and a variety of other services like maid svce. Restaurants will do the same, but at a 15% rate. 15% is the typical standard tip for most tippable situations.
What to pack?Bermuda is more formal than the USA, so bring some nice clothes, especially for dining out. Altough even the local businessmen may wear Bermuda shorts to work, cutoffs are a no-no, as are halter tops and also swimsuits outside of pool or beach areas. Don't go shirtless anywhere, since it's considered very rude in Bermuda. Men, bring a tie, since lots of restaurants require them, and women, bring something on that level too, if you want to accompany your male travel partner for dinner. If you go during winter, bring a light jacket for evenings or windy days, and don't forget sunscreen and sunglasses no matter what season it is.
Entry RequirementsUS citizens, bring your passport...although it's not required for stays of under 6 months, it will make your entry go smoother. Bring at least a driver's license or some sort of official proof of identity, as well as a return ticket. Canadians, same thing. Everyone else, get your passports ready if you want to come to Bermuda.
Are things always open in Bermuda, like in the US?The answer is no. Sundays and national holidays you'll see everything shut down, including many restaurants. Busses and ferries will also become limited. Tourist places will stay open, so you can still rent snorkeling masks or whatever else you'd planned.
Will my hair dryer work in Bermuda?Yes, electrical system is the same as the USA and Canada: 110 volt and 60 cycle AC. You will not need an adapter.
