Golfing in Bermuda

Beautiful Vistas and Proper Attire

Eight golf courses on a 22 square-mile island makes for spectacular ocean views at every hole, every putting green, and every golf country club in Bermuda. The vistas can't be beat, and the variety of courses is something in and of itself that will make you want to come back again and again. Each golf course in Bermuda has its own character but each still operates under tight protocol which permeates every aspect of Bermuda, but especially the golf courses. Proper Golf Attire applies everywhere you take your clubs, so bring a golfing shirt with a collar, and Bermuda shorts or nice pants. No cutoffs, no tank tops, and no jeans.

The Courses

Of the eight golf courses in Bermuda, five are public. That's good news for tourists, since the three private courses are members-only clubs that restrict access to non-members. Here's the low-down on what courses are public, and where they're located:

  • Port Royal Golf Course.Public. Located in Southampton, one of the best public golf courses in the world. There are holes on cliffs and challenging tree hazards that will keep any golfer busy at the game.
  • St. George's Golf Course.Public. It's very close to the World Heritage Site of Fort St. Catherine and has views of the old fort, as well as the ocean below.
  • Ocean View Golf Course.Public. Close to Hamilton, so convenient for lots of visitors. It's only nine holes and government run, but the locals love it. It's considered an easy course.
  • Belmont Hills Golf Club.Public. This has been redesigned in 2003, and presents a challenging game. The fairways are narrow, and there are multi-tiered greens.
  • Fairmont Southampton Golf ClubPublic. This course is small with lots of greenery surrounding the fairways, so rather than a power swing you'll need finesse and maybe some luck. You'll also need that extra golf skill because this course is on a hill and it can get windy.
  • Mid Ocean Golf Club.Private. If you're lucky, rich and famous maybe you can play here. It's very exclusive, and also Bermuda's best course, in the view of most pros and amateurs alike.
  • Riddell's Bay Golf & Country Club. Private, but with some reserved times for non-members to play. It's the oldest one in Bermuda. Set on a narrow strip of land with stunning views.
  • Tucker's Point Golf Club.Private, but non-members can reserve a tee-time if space is available. New championship course. Has good hazards and Tiff Eagle Bermuda grass.

Bermuda Golf System

You can make a tee-time reservation for the three government-run golf courses, up to a year in advance. They have an automated system that makes it easy: you just call a number and that's it. The government courses are St. George, Port Royal and Ocean View. Plan to rent clubs, since carrying your own from home will mean having to lug them from your cruise ship or from your hotel. Since tourists aren't allowed to rent cars, you'll have to be schlepping your clubs all over Bermuda in taxis, since they won't fit on a scooter, bus or bicycle. Renting is much easier, and costs from US$25 to $40 for a full set.
