Museum of the Bermuda Historical Society/Bermuda Public Library
Hamilton
Bermuda is Britain's oldest colony, and probably the most famous vacation spot in the former colonial collection of properties. In the early 1600's Britain was deeply involved in getting to and exploring the New World, and in 1609 a ship stumbled upon (that is, ship-wwrecked on) Bermuda and thus began the colonization of this famous resort island.
Bermuda has since kept a close relationship with its history, with a strong sense of the past everywhere you look. At the Museum of the Bermuda Historical Society and Bermuda Public Library, you'll find a seriously complete array of historical items documenting the long history since colonization in the 1600's.
There's a microfilm collection of newspapers dating way back to 1784, and more historical books on Bermuda than you knew ever existed. Maps, rare books, coins, furniture, portraits, a letter from George Washington...this museum holds top-level quality historical items that anyone even remotely interested in history will appreciate.
Bermuda has a rich history, and you can steep yourself in all aspects of this carefully preserved historical panorama for free, six days a week. Donations are accepted.
