Shopping in Bermuda

Local Artisan Products and High Quality Goods

Shopping in Bermuda is all about high-quality items and local craftmanship. You'll find boutiques full of British imports like china, woolens and cashmeres, and artisan studios selling hand-blown glass, sculpture, paintings, and curiously: dolls. This is high-end shopping, and prices run accordingly, although sometimes there are bargains on European-made china and crystal. Don't expect colorful bazaars with peddlars in their booths hawking discount goods. Remember, this is Bermuda, where British influence still permeates all aspects of daily life. No haggling, it's not the proper thing to do in Bermuda. This is high-end shopping for high-end products. Think pricey department store, comparable to Saks in the US, but not quite as trendy. You'll see kilts, Bermuda shorts, dinnerware, and Swiss watches.

Bermuda is full of artisans who create beautiful items for sale all over the island. The famous pastel colors of the island are depicted in many forms by all types of artists, and you can buy original artwork or you can purchase the prints. Both make wonderful mementos of your trip to Bermuda. Local artists also put their work onto tee-shirts and notecards, if your budget doesn't allow for art purchases. You'll also see local artists selling their handmade jewelry, which often has island themes and is equally lovely.

Local Products

Bermuda has some local production setups going on, such as pottery works that produce mugs and dinnerware, and Royall Fragrances. There's also Outbridge, who makes sherry pepper sauces, and also a local honey works. Local-made products and antiques more than 100 years old are the only items you can purchase duty-free, by the way.

Of course, there are also Bermuda rum and liqueur productions selling their wares throughout the island. Bermuda rum is a well-known product around the world, and makes great gifts for people back home. Look for stores that will ship it for you, right from the store. Look for these delectable items:

  • Bermuda Gold
  • Bermuda Banana
  • Godling's Black Seal Rum
  • Fourways Dark and Stormy Cakes made with rum
  • Banana Coconut Rum

How and Where to go Shopping in Bermuda

Although items are high end and high-priced in Bermuda, at least there is no sales tax. Keep this in mind as you view price tags, since what you see is what you pay. In general, you can shop 9 to 5 Monday through Saturday. There are exceptions to this, such as stores in Hamilton extending their hours into the evening on Wednesdays for Harbour Night, which occurs April through October. Also, stores stay open later on Fridays during the Christmas shopping season.

Shopping around to compare prices on a particular item within Bermuda won't get you very far because the Bermuda merchants' association keeps prices the same across the country. Liquor is an exception to this.

Shopping is easiest in Hamilton, where you have a tight density of little shops along Front Street, as well as a mall and an atrium-style collection of shops under one roof. St. George's has artisan studios and boutiques in the following areas:

  • Hunters Wharf
  • Penno's Wharf
  • Somers Wharf
  • Duke of York Street
  • Water Street

In the West End head to the Clocktower Centre at Royal Naval Dockyard for your shopping.
