Devils Hole Aquarium

Smith's Parish

Although we call this Devil's Hole Aquarium, the use of the word aquarium is very loose here. Devil's Hole is a great spot to visit for viewing fish, but there are no tanks. It's more natural here...not really anything too scientific like you'd find at the bigger aquarium across the way in Bermuda. This is a nice little grotto connected to Harrington Sound

via some tunnels. Vacationers can look down into the seawater from a wooden walkway and see sea turtles and tropical fish. The grotto has been stocked just for this purpose. The aquarium used to be just a fish pond owned by a man named Mr. Trott. He built a wall up around the fish pond, not so he could form an aquarium, but ironically to keep people out. This was in 1830, and the wall just make people very curious about what he could possibly have in the pond. In 1843 the curiosity of the public got so great, and Trott felt such pressure, that he allowed some people in to vew the pond, for an amission price of course. The pond if very deep, and there are around 400 residents living within its walls. There are sharks and groupers, and today they'll let you fish, although you can't use hooks.

It does make for a fun diversion, and it doesn't cost much either. You can buy a bucket of food to feed the fish, and maybe snap some good photos for later.
