Fort Hamilton
Hamilton
Fort Hamilton lies just outside the limits of the city of Hamiton, and it's got everything you'd want to see when visiting a grand old fort: big guns, underground passageways, and yes, a moat. In the 1860s the passageways were cut through lots and lots of thick rock, an amazing accomplishment of the Royal Engineers. Unfortunately, and Fort Hamilton is not alone in this, the structure was outdated even before it was completed. The big 18-ton guns were never used in combat. The views are magnificent, though, and there are weekly ceremonies (was it mentioned that Bermuda loves pomp and circumstance?) involving pipe bands and kilts, drummers and dances.
Fort Hamilton is open every day, and it's free. It's best to get here via moped or taxi. Located on Happy Valley Rd, Pembroke.
