Gate's Fort

West End and St. George's Parish Area

Gates Fort isn't much of a fort these days, but it is a pretty spot on the sea to visit if you have a free afternoon. The fort was named after Sir Thomas Gates, who was one of the survivors of the Sea Venture, actually the first one to reach land. The surrounding Gates Bay of course was named for him, too.

Actually also considered more of a park, called Gates Fort Park,

this area is a rather good spot to get a view of the areas around St. George's Harbour, in particular the view shows Town Cut, which is an important channel in the area. You can get there by following Barry Rd until it changes into Cut Road, and then you're there. It's free, and you can go sunrise to sunset.
