Gibbs Hill Lighthouse
Southampton Parish
This a lighthouse made from cast iron. You heard it right, travellers to Bermuda, that's cast iron. Only the second one ever built, Gibbs Hill Lighthouse stands 117 feet high over the ocean. Back in 1846, when the London-designed lighthouse was first opened,
the light source was three large-actually very large buring wicks. Today it's a thousand-watt bulb. Bermuda tourists who visit the lighthouse can climb up the lighthouse via the 185 spiral stairs but if you dont' like heights, forget about it. Gibbs Hill Lighthouse stands 362 feet above the sea, so it's a long way down, even if you're just looking. If you make it to the top, and it happens to be a windy day, guess what the tower sways in the wind, so you're in for some real excitement.
To get to Gibbs Hill Lighthouse, go to Lighthouse Road in Southampton Parish. There's a small admission fee and it's open every day 9am to 4:30pm.
