Bermuda History

Five hundred miles out into the Atlantic Ocean from the US lies Bermuda, a small island associated with big money, British island colonial culture, and fun in the sun. You won't find any place on earth quite like this place, with its mix of leftover British traditions and sense of order & properness, and thriving pub & cricket culture mixed with island living, ocean sports, pastel cottages & mopeds everywhere. Bermuda consists of a mere twenty two square miles of quaintness and transplanted British society: cute boutique shopping streets, perfectly maintained house gardens, picture-perfect cottages, golf courses, and tennis courts. Outside of this highly-civilized and suburban society created over three and a half centuries of British colonial influence, Bermuda offers travelers year-round sun, sea, and sand in a near-perfect climate.

Bermuda is among the richest countries on the globe, and it has no income tax. Per capita income is high, and unemployment is low, as is crime. The sense of protocol is strong here in Bermuda, so if your idea of the perfect tropical getaway is playing in the sun by day and elegant dining at night, Bermuda is for you. If you like to play dress-up and go out for a fancy dinner after basking in the sun all day, Bermuda is for you. It's one of the few tropical islands in the world where a casual dress code has not been adopted, and it's even frowned upon.

Bermuda has an interesting colonial history, which may help explain much of this, but it helps to look at the present-day tourism industry and how this tropical getaway island is regarded today. Only when we combine history with present-day situations, can we come to understand Bermuda and its unique blend of traditions and characteristics.

You see, even though Bermuda has been an independent country since the late 1960's, the cloak of over three hundred years of British cultural influence hasn't yet been removed, and perhaps never will be. That's not necessarily a bad thing..., for Bermuda today is unique blend of English character and island culture, and it attracts throngs of vacationing Americans each year. In fact, travel brochures and tv commercials aimed at American tourists push the idea of a highly civilized tropical getaway where islanders wear Bermuda shorts with a suit coat and tie, where guests will be treated like royalty by smiling uniformed resort workers. And it works...90% of Bermuda's tourists are from the United States, many of them beleaguered workers from the East Coast cities like New York, Washington D.C., and Boston, from whose airports several flights a day are headed for Bermuda.

Bermuda also has great deals on timeshares. Well-appointed timeshare resorts on the water are quickly becoming the preferred type of accommodation for Bermuda’s visitors.

Bermuda is the antidote to the workaday world, and the cure for long winters. There are dozens of vacation deals at any given moment, packaged hotel-flight discounts that draw more than half a million US travelers each year to the sunny beaches of paradise in Bermuda. Come and see for yourself why Bermuda is so beloved by so many vacationers.
