Old Devonshire Church
Devonshire Parish
Old Devonshire Church has certainly earned its name. The church site is very very old, with a church existing on this spot since 1612, practically the minute George Somers landed on the beach. The present version of the church was built shortly after 1970, but it's a replica of the church that was built in the same spot, in 1716. The 1716 version, which by the way
burned down in 1970, was built to replace the original 1612 church. The fire that destroyed version number two, in 1970, was the result of an explosion on Easter Sunday. The building is made of limestone and cedar, and it looks more like a cottage than a church. There are original 1600's era items in the church, like the pulpit and the pews, and the communion table. The oldest silver pieces in Bermuda are housed here, dating back to 1590.
Old Devonshire Church is located on Middle Road in Devonshire Parish. You can go in and look around any day between 9 and 5:30, and it's free.
