Ordnance Island

St. George's

Head to Ordnance Island for a taste of founder-day era history of Bermuda. You'll see a tribute statue to George Somers, the original whipwrecked captain who ws the first European to set foot on the island, and who is considered the discoverer of Bermuda. The statue is life-sized and created by local scultptor Desmond Fountain. You'll get to go below deck on a life-sized replica of Deleverance II. The original ship was built in 1610 by Somers and other survivors of the shipwreck, and was intended to carry him off Bermuda and on to Jamestown. Go below deck and meet the resident mannequins, who depict the miserable cramped life in the ship.

There's a small admission fee to Ordnance Island, and you can go there every day, April through Novemer, 9 to 5. It's located off the southern end of King's Square, in St. George's Harbour.
