Royal Naval Dockyard

West End Area

The Royal Naval Dockyard has everything for everyone, believe it or not. Everyone who comes here will find something either fascinating, memorable, or exciting, that will become a feature of his or her Bermuda vacation. Obviously once a Royal Nanal Dockyard, the area on the tip of Bermuda is now home to shops, cafes, restaurants, a mall, a museum,

a pub, a movie theater, and a craft market. The whole group or whomever you are travelling with can while away an entire day here, especially when you consider there are seaside and in-sea activities as well. Go snorkeling at Snorkel Park or swim with dolphins. Just hang out and enjoy the view of the water, or go souvenir-hunting in one of the many shops here.

After the US won independence from the British in the late 1700's, the Royal Fleet needed a new home base and Bermuda got the job, so to speak. The Royal Naval Dockyard became the center of operations after much sweat equity upt in by Britihs convicts who were forced to build the center. They lived in prison ships in terrible conditions. In WWII, the shipyard was used by American forces, ironically, even by NATO for a brief time. It was sold in the 1960s by the cash-strapped British Admiralty.
